From Brink to Bronte
Fascinating book lifts, reference cabinets and walking in circles
The most memorable experiences of central library for me have tended to be to do with navigation and orientation. From my first visit I enjoyed the absolute certainty that wherever I started to walk I would end up back where I began. The stacks and the language and literature library although at times disorientating, are rather reassuring because of the absolute certainty of forever returning to, where you once began. Thus I began my cyclical walks on a regular basis.
My particular interests lay in studying the surfaces and fabric of the library, revealed and yet hidden, whether it be the locked cages in the stacks, the shafts of the book lifts or reference cabinets with cataloguing that speculate potential untold fables; From ‘Brink to Bronte’ or ‘Unloved to Lunch’. It is a search for the very ether and spirit that lies at the heart of the library.
